Blessed Are Those Who Have Regard for the Weak: Responding to COVID-19

We heartedly hope and pray everyone is doing well.

Today is Day 3 of our mandated COVID-19 school off-site operation. While it’s been a whirlwind of information and updates, it’s also been eerily silent. As we all sink into the new reality of isolation, we all are asking questions: how long will this last? How long will we have to stay away from others? Will we get sick? Is it really as bad as it seems?

Goodness

Jesus’ gift of new life equips us to do good. God resurrects us from our death in sin so that we become alive in Jesus Christ.

Consider how our image of God is reborn in our resemblance to Christ. We are alive to the cause of justice. We delight in the Father’s will. We do to others just as Jesus has done to us. We bear the Spirit’s good fruit to nourish others and to glorify God. God rejuvenates us unblemished, and we are, once again, made very good in God’s eyes.

Lesson 4: God is a Refuge for Us

Everyone responds to the sirens.

The loud and monotonous wail of the tornado sirens sends all of us into action. The imminent threat of a violent storm launches us into action. We quickly move towards our place of shelter. For some of us it’s a basement or crawl space. For others it’s a closet or a nook in the house that will provide the most protection if the tornado hits. And yet for the most desperate, for those without shelter, it’s a ditch or a hole in the ground that will have to suffice. Regardless, when a life threatening storm arises, we seek refuge.

Artist Spotlight: Elementary Christmas tree

Every year, it is an elementary art class tradition that each grade makes a different ornament and gets to place their ornament on the Christmas tree. Lesson 3: This is My Body

Jesus took on flesh so that we could really know and experience Him. The incarnation was a gift to humanity in that it made God approachable and accessible. Prior to God “taking on flesh and dwelling among us” humanity was reduced to communing with God via a mediator. Priests and animal sacrifices were essential for atoning for sins. Sin created a barrier between God and humanity that felt precarious at best and insurmountable at worst.

Lesson Two: He Put On Flesh

We, like God, are nuanced and multi-dimensional beings.

Because we are made in His image we are endowed with many of the same qualities and characteristics of God. Like Him, we are rational, relational, aesthetic, and emotional.

The Weekly Word: Joy in the Presence of Enemies

Jesus lived in a land overrun by enemies. He formed friendships with people who doubted, denied, betrayed, and abandoned him. He studied and taught a Word that people ignored, misunderstood, and sought to silence. When He went into a house of prayer to talk with His Father, He found himself unhappily arrived in a den of robbers. Yet when this man of sorrows anticipated the custody of the cross, He announced plans for a feast with toasts and food and songs of celebration.
