RA Student Literary Series: When the Moon Rises

When the Moon Rises | ChristyAnn

When the moon rises at night

every silent thing comes to life.

The crickets leap onto their stems of grass

and begin the opening for the night-long orchestra.

Then the wind comes,

humming softly, stirring the grass and the leaves to wakefulness.

They sway, creating a subtle bass that brings even the wildest things

to pause and listen.

Sometimes, if you are near the ocean, you can hear the waves

softly crashing against the sand on a silent beach.

Out in the country, where the dirt joins the band, you can see

where even the stars come out

to shine countless spotlights on the musicians of nature.

Up where it is snowy, bright lights clash in the sky,

like tambourines creating a thrilling climax in the music.

But just outside the city, where it is just the wind and the grass and a small puddle,

you can find a small person,

content to listen to the moon's song for her.
